February is a great time to discuss internet safety! Tomorrow (Feb. 9th) is Safer Internet Day (SID) and Digital Learning Day is coming up on February 17th.
I wanted to share a lesson plan you can use in your classroom this week to discuss how we can make the internet a better place. Additional Resources K-2 Lesson - Going Places Safely 3-5 Lesson - Rings of Responsibility If you love Pinterest, you may want to follow some of the Digital Learning Day boards. Activities and Ideas from DLD Digital Tools from DLD I just wanted to send a reminder out about all of the wonderful digital content available through your Discovery Education subscription.
Don't forget the weekly Global News stories that are published each Wednesday. Global Stories is a segment for K-5 students and covers 2 top news stories for the week. Global Wrap highlights key world events for grades 6-12; however, this may be appropriate for our 4th and 5th graders as well. You can preview the video or the transcript to see if the content works for your group. To access these videos, go to My DE Services after logging onto the Discovery Ed site. Scroll down to the Globals News block on the right side of the page to access the weekly content. Select K-5 Global Stories by clicking on the drop-down arrow in the upper right corner of the Global News window. This is a great way to keep your students global connected on a weekly basis! Also, Discovery Ed has excellent resources ready for Black History month. Check out their Content Collection full of videos on Bessie Coleman, Rosa Parks, Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr., W.E.B DuBois, racial segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and more. As with all the Content Collections, there is a Spotlight on Strategies (S.O.S.) featured called Reminds Me Of which is excellent for helping students make connections while being able to get up and move. A search for Black History turns up even more content - like the video "Black History: Analyze Historical Figures and Civil Rights" for K-5 students. There's even Lesson Starters and a DE blog post with additional resources and events - like a Virtual Viewing party on February 23rd during which students across the country will share in the story of Ruby Bridges, the first black student to attend an all-white elementary school. Check out the upcoming 2016 webinars on the edWeb Webinar Calendar.
This week is Computer Science Education Week. In honor of this week, code.org kicking off the third annual Hour of Code campaign with a free one-hour tutorial from Princess Leia or Rey on how to build their own Star Wars games and program the droids R2-D2, C-3PO and BB-8. The tutorial, created in partnership with Disney and Lucasfilm, is called Star Wars: Building a Galaxy with Code. It teaches logic and problem solving through basic computer programming.
Code.org also offers easy coding activities for students which include popular charaters and games such as Frozen and Minecraft. Learn more here! These are tons of fun and they walk students through how to code with step by step instructions and videos. Made with Code is also offering a coding activity based on the popular movie Inside Out. Check out these activities and share them with your students! Global Educator Institute (GEI) is a new organization with the mission of evaluating educational products and improving education. The goal is to pair great products with great teachers, who then test them with their students for at least six weeks and provide GEI with valuable feedback and recommendations. Teachers have a voice in determining which products are elevated to becoming endorsed and receive the GEI Seal of Endorsement. If you are a teacher, or know of anyone who is, please take five minutes to sign up and create a confidential profile.
